Singapore’s New API Platform Wants to Unclog Global Shipping
Singapore just dropped a new digital platform called OCEANS-X, and it’s basically a universal translator for the global shipping industry.
Here’s the deal: getting a ship into port involves mountains of paperwork, manual checks, and a lot of back-and-forth. But with OCEANS-X, maritime companies and government agencies can now plug their computer systems directly into each other. Think of it as a secure, high-speed data highway for the sea.
Instead of logging into a portal and filling out forms, shipping agents can now connect their in-house or third-party software straight to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) digital platforms. This means port clearance applications get transmitted automatically. Less typing, fewer errors, and ships get in and out faster.

And it’s not just about paperwork. OCEANS-X also lets Singapore swap ship certificates electronically with partner ports, including those it has Green and Digital Shipping Corridors with. That gives port authorities a more secure way to verify documents and cuts reliance on old-school paper trails.
Right now, the platform hosts over 100 APIs and datasets. Want to build an AI tool that predicts port congestion or an app that helps captains dodge bad weather? MPA is inviting startups and industry players to develop new services. Researchers and the public can even dive into public maritime data for their own projects.
It’s early days, but OCEANS-X feels like a major step toward a world where global trade flows as smoothly as your Netflix queue. And honestly, that’s long overdue.
