Every year during the holy month of Ramadan, the Geylang area in Singapore comes alive with the bustling sounds and smells of the Ramadan Bazaar. This lively event attracts visitors worldwide, offering various traditional Malay and Muslim cuisine, clothing, and souvenirs. This year, the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar will run from 17th March – 22nd April 2023 with more than 700 stalls.
Joo Chiat Complex is usually the starting point of the bazaar, located at 1 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 420001. From there, visitors can navigate the maze of stalls and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the bazaar. (directions at the bottom of the article)
As you enter the bazaar, the first thing that will catch your attention is the delicious aroma of grilled meats, kebabs, and satay. Many vendors offer mouth-watering dishes such as nasi lemak (coconut rice with fried chicken or fish), murtabak (stuffed pancake), and the popular “Ramly Burger” – a juicy beef or chicken burger topped with a fried egg.
Besides food, visitors can also explore a range of cultural and religious items, including traditional clothing such as baju kurung and hijabs, prayer mats, and Islamic books. You can also find unique souvenirs, such as intricately handcrafted pottery, artisanal soaps, and beautifully designed prayer beads.
Another highlight of the bazaar is the nightly performances by local musicians and dancers, adding to the event’s lively atmosphere. The traditional Malay dance performances are especially captivating and give visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Malay community in Singapore.
The Ramadan Bazaar in Geylang is an excellent opportunity for visitors to experience Singapore’s Muslim community’s diverse culture and traditions. The bazaar has something to offer everyone, from delicious food to live performances and unique souvenirs.
