Discover Human Being Human: A Captivating Exhibition at The Private Museum in Singapore Art Week 2026

As Singapore Art Week 2026 kicks off, art enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to explore the human condition through a compelling new exhibition. The Private Museum presents “Human Being Human: Selections from the Collection of John and Cheryl Chia,” a showcase that invites deep reflection on identity, purity, and existence amid global upheaval. Running from January 19 to April 26, 2026, this exhibition draws from the private collection of John and Cheryl Chia; it focuses on artworks centered on the human body as the core site of vulnerability and experience.

The exhibition’s title, Human Being Human, captures a moment of possibility in our lives. Our journeys are shaped by the quest for identity and goodness, even in turbulent times. Curated by Tamares Goh and Aaron Teo, the show organizes the works into four conceptual chapters: Stateless, State, Statehood, and Rebirth. These themes trace the human trajectory toward self-understanding, offering viewers a shared exploration of the inescapable human condition.

John and Cheryl Chia began their art collecting journey about 25 years ago while working as medical officers. What started as curious engagement quickly grew into a passion for intellectually stimulating and culturally resonant pieces. As Cheryl Chia eloquently puts it: “We are drawn to art that reflects our times, that reflects our experiences… (Art) it is an extension of our experiences, our thoughts, our ideas. It comes from somebody else, but it makes up the world that we live in. And we live in the here and now…” This perspective inspires the exhibition, encouraging audiences to see how contemporary art illuminates life’s complexities.

Held in conjunction with Singapore Art Week 2026, the exhibition opens with a reception on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM. The Guest of Honour is Ms Yeoh Chee Yan, Chairman of the National Heritage Board. The programme includes registration at 6:00 PM, an opening ceremony at 7:00 PM, and concludes at 9:00 PM. Registration is mandatory; secure your spot via the link: https://forms.office.com/r/2i9s69gfhu. Due to limited parking, visitors are encouraged to use public transport or private hire services.
